Why Shawnee sewer lines fail

Shawnee stretches a long way east to west, and the sewer laterals change as you go. The older east side near Nieman Road and downtown Shawnee holds mid-century homes on clay or early plastic pipe that has been in the ground for decades, cracking and sagging with age, while the newer construction out toward Monticello and K-7 is younger but sits on the same restless soil. Johnson County's expansive clay is the common enemy. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry, working the pipe back and forth until joints separate and low spots form. Then the roots from Shawnee's mature trees find the cracks, and you get the slow drains and backups that bring people to call me. Lining instead of trenching

When the pipe is cracked or full of roots but still holding its shape, cured-in-place lining is the cleanest repair. I saturate a felt liner with resin, pull it through the old lateral, and cure it in place to form a new seamless pipe inside the old one. The joints the roots used to exploit are gone, and there is no trench scarring your Shawnee yard. For a lot of the older east-side homes here, that is the whole job. When it needs full replacement

If the clay soil movement has collapsed the lateral or pulled it badly out of line, a liner will not hold and the pipe has to be replaced. Pipe bursting does that without a long trench. I pull a new HDPE pipe along the existing path while a bursting head splits the old pipe outward, working from two small pits instead of a ditch across the drive. Camera first, so there are no surprises

Every Shawnee job starts with a sewer camera, because guessing is how yards get torn up for nothing. I feed the camera down the lateral, find the break, the belly, or the root intrusion, and measure how far it sits from the access point.
