Trenchless vs. Traditional Sewer Repair: What's the Difference?

When a sewer line needs to be fixed, there are two broad ways to do it: the traditional dig, or the trenchless methods. For most Kansas City homes the trenchless route is preferable, but not always. Here is the honest comparison.

Traditional repair: the open trench

The old standard is to dig a trench along the length of the sewer line, remove the bad pipe, lay new pipe, and fill it back in. It works on any pipe condition, including a full collapse. The downside is the trench itself: it tears through lawns, driveways, patios, and mature landscaping, and restoring all of that is often a bigger job than the pipe work. In KC's older neighborhoods with established trees and hardscaping, that restoration cost is real.

Trenchless repair: little or no digging

Trenchless methods fix the line through one or two small access points instead of a full trench. There are two:

• Pipe lining (CIPP) threads a resin liner into the existing pipe and cures it hard, forming a smooth new pipe inside the old one. Best for a pipe that is cracked or root-filled but still in place.
• Pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through the old one while breaking the old pipe outward. Best for a line that has collapsed or is too far gone to line.

How they compare

Trenchless wins on yard damage, speed, and usually total cost once you count restoration. Traditional wins on one thing: it can handle situations trenchless cannot, like a line that has collapsed in a way bursting cannot pull through, or severe misalignment. That is exactly why the camera inspection comes first, it tells you which methods are even on the table.
